NEWPORT DOCUMENTARY Eric Haas to produce documentary: Newport: Gangsters, Gamblers, & Girls
06/03/2010Eric Haas to produce documentary:
Working with Zone Communications, and the Newport Gangster Tour, Eric Haas, President of National Band & Tag, is set to produce a documentary that highlights Newport’s illegal casino years of 1900-1963.
“It’s a great story, and its one that hasn’t been seen or heard by a large audience. With the arrival of the Casino in Downtown Cincinnati, there may never be a more appropriate time to tell the story of Newport to a national audience. This will be good for Northern Kentucky.” said Haas.
What started as a dinner conversation with political activist Dick Hammersmith, has turned into a major film production. Hearing members of the Gangster Tour had written a script, Hammersmith introduced the Gangsters to Haas, as well as, Zone Communications, and the project quickly came together.
“The story is so compelling; that its relative obscurity is just shocking.” said Hammersmith. “Eric’s know how, and ability to get things accomplished will ensure the film’s success.”
“We couldn’t be more excited. It is a major production, and we are looking to tell this story to a National Audience.” said Brandon Farris, Director Zone Communications. “With Eric’s input and organization, the Gangster team’s historical knowledge, and our production capabilities the documentary will be film festival worthy.”
“The story of Newport is important, not just to the region, but to the country. All the major crime families were involved in the operations of the town, and Newport was the model for Vegas. The town provided managerial ‘know how’, sophistication, and labor force that helped Vegas accelerate its growth.” said Jerry Gels, co-writer and co-creator of the popular walking tour Newport: Gangsters, Gamblers, and Girls.
“As a history teacher, and Northern Kentuckian we take a lot of pride in telling the story right. The exciting thing is there are so many primary sources available, from locals that lived through the days to archival footage that the film will be successful.” said Mac Cooley, Gangster Guide and co-creator of the documentary.
