Locals Nominated for Primetime Emmy

09/04/2007
A Lion In The House, a film by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, was nominated for a 2007 National Primetime Emmy for "Exceptional Merit in Non Fiction Filmmaking." A Lion in the House is a four-hour documentary shot at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital that chronicles five families fighting childhood cancer over the course of six years. LION had its world premiere at Sundance in January 2006 and aired nationally on Independent Lens in June 2006. Six from the Cincinnati area will be traveling to the Award Presentation at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. on Sept. 8th, including Adam Ashcraft, the brother of Justin Ashcraft, one of the LION subjects, and his wife Shelly Wight. Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, Line Producer Melissa Godoy, and Associate Producer Karen Durgans will all be in attendance. As September kicks off National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, LIONs outreach activities extend from Washington to Hollywood. Julia says, "Awards are good, but we have always believed a film is just the beginning. It finds a lasting, concrete value in the way it fosters dialogue and spurs action on the community level." The Emmys judging criteria for the "Exceptional Merit in Non Fiction Filmmaking" includes films that have "a profound social impact, significant innovation of form, and remarkable mastery of filmmaking technique" as well as "the compelling power of storytelling, and the program's capacity to inform, transport, impact, enlighten, and create a moving and indelible work that elevates the art of nonfiction filmmaking."
