THE CARNEGIE TO CLOSE INAUGURAL FILM SERIES WITH
POIGNANT DOCUMENTARY FILMED LARGELY IN CINCINNATI
COVINGTON, KY- The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center (The Carnegie) in Covington will close the maiden season of the Cinema Carnegie film series with lauded documentary A Lion in the House, playing Saturday, May 31 at 6:00pm in the Otto M. Budig Theatre. Tickets are $8 general admission and $7 for Cinema Carnegie Society members. Award-winning filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert will host a talkback immediately following the screening.
A Sundance Film Festival Official Selection and winner of four major film festival awards, A Lion in the House traces six years in the lives of five families, each with a child fighting cancer. The film was shot primarily at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, home of one of the country’s top pediatric oncology divisions, where the children were treated. With an unprecedented amount of access into meetings, counseling sessions, surgeries, and difficult family discussions, A Lion in the House provides a remarkable window into the heart-wrenching trials of young cancer patients, their families and caretakers.
Filmmakers Bognar and Reichert approached the film with an idea of what they might encounter in its creation, as indeed their own daughter is a childhood cancer survivor. Their professional credentials doubtless also lent to the caliber of the film. Bognar has had all four of his films premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and Reichert is a two-time Academy Award nominee for Best Feature Documentary.
Having opened in January 2008 with two screenings of the Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise classic Rainman, Cinema Carnegie is predicated upon the representation of multiple film genres and formats and includes a diverse lineup of documentaries, “art house” films, short films, foreign films, and repertory classics. The series also features films with local connections, celebrating pieces filmed in the Greater Cincinnati area and those including filmmakers, directors, and actors with community ties. WNKU is media partner for Cinema Carnegie.
